The Bloody Point Cemetery is one of the six Gullah cemeteries on the Island.
Honoring the departed was a crucial part of the vibrant Gullah culture on Daufuskie Island. With a deep-rooted Gullah belief that the soul finds its way back to Africa through water, each cemetery was thoughtfully located near flowing waters.
The Cooper River gracefully embraces this sacred burial ground. It lays along Mungeon Creek. It was for the burial of slaves during the plantation era and was used until late in the 20th Century. Bloody Point Cemetery is also the final resting place of influential plantation owners. Unfortunately, a portion of the cemetery has been lost to beach erosion.
