The Daufuskie Island Fire District, in conjunction with Beaufort County, will conduct a Reverse 911 test on May 31, 2013 starting at 6 p.m. and ending around 9 p.m. The purpose of the test is to assure that the Reverse 911 system is working on Daufuskie Island and to work out any deficiencies that may arise before a disaster occurs. The Reverse 911 system was designed to alert a precise group of people in Beaufort County that an emergency has or is about to occur in a specific geographical area. This system may give specific instructions on your land line phone number based on the emergency event. If you did not receive notification of this test on your land line during the time the test was made, you should contact Curtis Young at cyoung@bcgov.net. Advise Curtis that you did not receive notification and give him that land line phone number. This test does not apply to cell phones! Eddie Boys, Chief.

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND COMMUNITY LIBRARY: Please, folks, be considerate. The Library is happy to receive recent print publications, movie DVDs, audiobook CDs and Lowcountry titles. BUT, the Library is NOT a dumping ground for your discarded books. Recently someone left nine boxes of books on the Museum porch, including a phone book and 1991 PDR. This is not fair. We are not in the used book business; do not have the means to handle these books. The Bargain Box and Friends of Hilton Head Library will happily receive your discarded books. For Haig Pointers, they will even pick up at Embarkation on Hilton Head. Just give them a call. Please be selective – your gifts of shopping bag size are appreciated, multiple boxes are not.

From Melrose on the Beach: The Marsh Tacky Beach Races on Daufuskie Island were a success! An estimated crowd of around 1,200 people came out on Saturday, April 27th to witness 19 of the finest Marsh Tacky horses compete for infinite bragging rights on the low tide beaches of Melrose on the Beach Resort. The weather was fantastic, the horses traveled well and a great time was had by all. Sources say that housing, dockage, and golf cart rentals were booked island-wide. News and documentary film crews covering the event from start to finish have guaranteed that Daufuskie is the beneficiary of significant media exposure while raising awareness for the historic and endangered Marsh Tacky horse.

This year’s Grand Champion, stallion Jack Friday, is a direct descendant of the last Marsh Tacky of Daufuskie named Hack Saw. This year’s geldings class winner is Sweet Home Alabama and taking victory in the mares class is Salt Creek Annie. Friday night’s Homecoming Fund Raiser and Silent Auction raised over $2,500 for the nonprofit Carolina Marsh Tacky Association. A very special thank you to all the wonderful sponsors, vendors, staff, volunteers, spectators, friends and family whose contributions and support helped to make this event a success. A small army worked around the clock to plan and execute in just 90 days what may be the largest special event that Daufuskie Island has ever hosted. It is agreed that this event is a great fit for all parties involved and that the races will be back and even better next year!

To leave your comments, suggestions, questions, or to get involved in next year’s planning, please email eveit@melroseonthebeach.com.

Resident Host Families Needed for Marsh Tacky Race Accommodations! As most island residents are aware from recent news reports, the Marsh Tacky Association has announced that it will hold its 5th annual beach race on Daufuskie Island on Saturday, April 26th. Previously run on Hilton Head Island, the races exists to celebrate and raise awareness of this endangered breed of horse and its significance to the history and heritage of the Low Country, including Daufuskie, where many Marsh Tacky horses roamed freely for more than a century.

More complete information about this race will be provided to Front Porch readers in the near future, including details about a community meeting outlining opportunities for involvement by local residents. In the meantime, however, Daufuskie Rental Group is working with the race event task force regarding housing for the event, and is coordinating with the Marsh Tacky Association to identify all available accommodations for race spectators.
Keeping in mind that more 7000 people attended last year’s race, we expect that all vacation rental properties will be booked very quickly. Accordingly, we are reaching out to island residents who are interested in acting as “Host Families” to race spectators.

If you are interested in including information about your home on a host family list, please send the following information to:deb@daufuskierentalgroup.com Name and Contact Information Address and Location of Home Number of Bedrooms Available Number of People Home Can Accommodate Can You Provide Transportation To and From the Dock and the Race for Guests? We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man’s life can be. The film tells a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.
