The Daufuskie Island community is dedicated to offering a distinct and challenging middle school education on an island without bridges.

Overview & Mission
-
DIIS is a middle school (grades 6–8).
-
It opened in 2023 to fill a need for local secondary education on the Island.
-
The school describes itself as a pilot school exploring a “community-supported” model of high-quality, affordable education for rural areas, especially where charter models may not be feasible.
-
DIIS uses an inquiry-based curriculum and emphasizes integration of the Island’s environment and community into learning (“living classroom”).
Context
-
Before DIIS existed, students in grades 6–12 had to travel to the mainland (Hilton Head area) by ferry and bus, often taking over an hour each way.
-
The Island already had a public elementary school (PreK–5) serving the local children.
Structure, Accreditation & Enrollment
-
DIIS is accredited (or is a member) under SCISA (South Carolina Independent School Association).
-
The “Head of School” / Principal is Tennille Scheriff.
-
As of the latest public listing, the enrollment is 10 students.
-
Its physical address is listed as 55 Avenue of Oaks, Daufuskie Island, SC 29915.
Curriculum & Community Integration
-
The school emphasizes marine science programming, environmental stewardship, and using the island as a “living classroom.”
-
They partner with organizations like SC Sea Grant, universities, and local conservation groups to bring expertise and resources to students.
-
The school also sees itself as a resource for the entire island community, offering programming, speaker events, and learning opportunities beyond just its student body.
