If you’ve ever thought about a “Destination Thanksgiving” before, it may seem like an unconventional choice.
And if your “Destination” is an island, only accessible by boat, it may sound daunting and difficult. But spending Thanksgiving weekend on Daufuskie Island can be a refreshing change from the usual routine and a chance to create new memories with your loved ones. Plus, it’s a great way to unplug before the hustle and bustle of the upcoming holiday season.
Whether you’re on vacation or just looking for something different, a Daufuskie Thanksgiving is a one-of-a-kind experience on our little Island.
How to do it.
Renting a home:
You’ll be amazed at the numerous vacation rental options available, each boasting at least three bedrooms and accommodating even larger groups. When you arrive, everyone can choose their favorite room and decide whether they want to share a room with Aunt Edna or not. And the conveniences? They’re all taken care of! Most accommodations provide a grill and lawn chairs for your enjoyment. You won’t need to bring any utensils, dish rags or cooking equipment – it’s all right there waiting for you. Just remember to bring your food!
Packing:
USE WHEELS! Bring sturdy, enclosed luggage that has wheels. A cooler with wheels is ideal. It also can double as a makeshift seat, while you are waiting to embark. Stay away from wagons, as things are likely to shift on the ferry or on the golf carts on the Island’s dirt roads.

Plan Ahead:
The key to a successful Thanksgiving on Daufuskie is to plan ahead. It’s important for all guests to communicate and assign dishes in advance. Create a list of traditional Thanksgiving dishes, such as turkey, mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole, and everyone sign up for what they would like to bring, such as appetizers, side dishes, and desserts. This way, no one is responsible.
The General Store does offer a little bit of everything you will need, but it’s no Publix. You’ll want to make sure you bring the essentials for each family FIRST and then add extra items around that. Make use of those leftovers for the rest of the weekend’s meals. And, don’t forget those adult beverages, as there are no full liquor stores available.
Don’t forget to pack for fun! Board games and cards are a perfect form of entertainment on this lazy Island. You will have TV, cell service and Wi-Fi, but Daufuskie is a place to unplug. A spirited game that includes everyone will surely make memories. And what’s better than a touch football game under live oaks and Carolina blue skies?
Getting Around:
Whether you are just spending the day or staying a week, you will need land transportation. Some rental properties include a golf cart in which case you just need transportation to get to there. When a property does not include a cart, you may need to rent one for your entire stay. The carts seat 4, so you may need to rent more than one. Go HERE for golf cart rental options. Then take it and the family for a spin around the Island.
